Always has been.

Have you ever handled a surgical scalpel? It’s an incredible tool - small, light and sharper than anything of its size and purpose. It takes thousands of hours of practice before someone is authorized to use it on human skin, and mastering it takes a lifetime.

You don’t want to give this tool to the wrong person. No matter how motivated, open to learning, well-meaning and hard-working they are, they will mess things up. They might be a chef, a hairdresser or any other professional handler of a cutting tool. Despite their adjacent experience, they will mess up. Handling a scalpel for the purpose of surgery is a difficult job with high responsibility.

The Silicon Valley Founder Meat Grinder

A few years ago I met a guy, let’s call him Jim, who was trying to break in tech by going to a bootcamp to become a developer. In the meantime, he worked as a bartender and had been living off the support of his girlfriend, who was from a well-off family and Jim was her trophy boyfriend. He approached me because he was really into startups and wanted to become a tech entrepreneur, and make the big bucks. His motivations notwithstanding, he was currently struggling with a routing issue in his food delivery app project, and asked for my help, which indicated to me that Jim is years, probably decades away from fulfilling his billion dollar startup dream. After helping him debug it, we exchanged contacts and kept in touch.

The new golden age of software development has arrived

If you ever had the wacky dream of running your company like a big tech firm, where all the tooling is proprietary and written in-house, you’ve never been closer to realizing it. We’re truly in the “if you can dream it, you can build it” phase of software development. Just look at the number of commits in Github in the last months! Everyone and their dog can code now, writing code is cheap.
Every possible combination of solved problems can be mixed to solve another problem, and it can be done in parallel, with the help of AI.

What's all this about?

If my writing made you entertained, inspired, angry, outraged, elated or evoked any sort of emotion in you, that’s good.
It’s all on purpose, and I took the time to craft it and type it in myself, without using AI.

I’m an engineer who loves computers, problem-solving and building products. I like writing about controversial topics in technology and software engineering. Sometimes I write about completely random stuff.

Whether you support my thinking or not, it’d be cool if you but me a coffee. Or, if you really insist on telling me how stupid and detached I am, feel free.
